Harmful pathogen Listeria monocytogenes detected in loose olives
According to a statement (No. 004/2021) by the BfR, listeria infections are increasing, often due to the contamination of ready-to-eat food. In addition to nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea after consuming affected food, listeria can also lead to blood poisoning or meningitis after a longer incubation period. Pregnant women, in particular, should avoid especially susceptible foods as a listeriosis infection can have fatal consequences for the unborn child.
Food monitoring in Lower Saxony has repeatedly detected Listeria monocytogenes in loose olives. It was noticeable that high levels of Listeria monocytogenes were particularly found in black/dyed olives.
Between 2018 and 2020, 62 olive samples were tested for Listeria monocytogenes.
In 11 cases (18%), Listeria monocytogenes was detected, and in 8 cases (13%), the samples were evaluated as harmful to health.
