Dried figs often contaminated with mycotoxins (mold toxins)

Between autumn 2017 and 2022, the CVUA Sigmaringen examined a total of 64 samples of dried figs. About one-third of the samples were objected to due to exceeding the maximum levels for Ochratoxin A or for the aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2.

These toxins are among the mold toxins, the so-called mycotoxins. Aflatoxins are highly hepatotoxic and carcinogenic. Ochratoxin A, due to its carcinogenic effects in experimental animals, is classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans.

Due to this issue, the Regulation (EU) 2022/1370 amending Regulation (EC) No. 1881/2006 established an EU-wide maximum level for Ochratoxin A of 8 µg/kg for dried figs, which has been in force since January 1, 2023.

In our Tentamus laboratories, we conduct tests for various mycotoxins.
