Insects in food marketable in the European Union – but with approval and labeling
Insects may now be placed on the market as food in the European Union. However, they must first be authorized by the European Commission as novel foods according to the Novel Food Regulation.
Currently, four insect species are approved as food in the EU:
- Larva of the mealworm beetle (Tenebrio molitor) (mealworm)
- Migratory locust (Locusta migratoria)
- House cricket (Acheta domesticus)
- Larvae of the lesser mealworm beetle (Alphitobius diaperinus) (buffalo worm)
Foods containing insects are offered as an alternative protein source to meat or fish and can be added to products like bread, pasta, or chips, albeit not without appropriate labeling.
The ingredient list on the label must specify which insect species is used, with both its Latin and German names. It must also state the form in which the insect was used, e.g., as a powder or in the form of a paste.
Additionally, there must be an indication that this ingredient may cause allergic reactions in people allergic to crustaceans, house dust mites, or mollusks. Moreover, the approval process sets criteria for the safe processing of insects. Insects are also considered in the National Residue Control Plan (NRCP), which specifically tests foods of animal origin for residues of undesirable substances.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we conduct tests for residues of undesirable substances.
