Food mostly free from pesticides

The EFSA has published this year's report on monitoring data on pesticide residues in food for 2016.

More than 96% of the analyzed samples were within the legal limits, around 51% were free of pesticide residues. For organic foods, around 99% were within the legal limits, 83% were free of quantifiable residues.

The figures were slightly lower than the previous year, but the difference is mainly due to the detection of chlorate residues. Chlorate was included in the control programs for the first time in 2016 to assist in setting maximum residue limits.

The EFSA also evaluated the results of the EU-coordinated control program (EUCP). The following foods were the focus: apples, cabbage, leeks, lettuce, peaches, strawberries, tomatoes, rye, wine, cow's milk, and pork fat. The lowest residual amounts were found in rye, head cabbage, and strawberries, with the highest exceedances in apples and tomatoes.

Simultaneously with the report, the EFSA provided a graphical tool that allows the results to be displayed in detail by country and food, and enables a comparison of the results from previous years.
