The network of official control laboratories for cosmetics (OCCL) examined 905 children's cosmetic products between 2017 and 2019 and found fault with many products, including due to prohibited colorants and preservatives as well as heavy metal content.
25% of the samples did not meet legal requirements. In particular, decorative cosmetics such as hair dyes, nail polishes, body and face paints, and lip products were criticized. Only a few care and cleansing products were criticized.
The following substances were detected in decorative children's cosmetics:
- High levels of heavy metals
- Carcinogenic nitrosamines
- Sensitizing preservatives (methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone)
