Revision of the guidelines for vegan and vegetarian foods
In October 2024, the revised guidelines for vegan and vegetarian foods with similarity to foods of animal origin were published.
Key changes compared to the old version are primarily the clarification of the scope of application as well as more specific requirements for the labeling of vegan and vegetarian foods with similarity to foods of animal origin.
Also new are the specific mention of substitute ingredients and descriptions of the sensory criteria that are relevant for assessing sensory similarity.
In addition, the following principle for naming inspirations from other areas is announced: If the alternative product resembles the food to which it is inspired, its designation can more precisely resemble the reference food. The classification previously used in the guidelines into "sufficient sensory similarity" and "extensive sensory similarity" is further explained.
