Öko-Test tests 17 paint colors - problematic preservatives contain thiazolinones

In the current Öko-Test Issue (August 2023), 17 water-based white varnishes were tested. Only one varnish received a positive rating ("good"). Most products contain concerning preservatives:

• Chloromethylisothiazolinone (CIT)
• Zinc pyrithione
• Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC)

Furthermore, it is criticized that some varnishes claim in their advertising to be "solvent-free" or to meet certain threshold values, which is not the case. The ingredients of the products are not always adequately disclosed, which is considered consumer-unfriendly.
