Product recall of a disinfectant hand gel

Product recall of a disinfectant hand gel

Currently, there is a recall of a hand gel advertised as antibacterial due to its chemical composition. Regulatory controls have detected a high amount of methanol (more than 60%) in the product. Methanol, especially at higher concentrations, has toxic effects and can cause blindness if ingested. According to the EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, it is not permitted except in small amounts as a denaturant.

Typically, ethanol is used as the active ingredient in such products.

Ensure the quality of such products and check active ingredients and their concentrations to comply with EU Cosmetics Regulation requirements. Furthermore, we support you in evaluating promotional claims (e.g., antibacterial) and conduct corresponding tests for you (compliance with Claims Regulation 655/2013).
