Recall: Undeclared Allergen Walnut in Prepackaged Bread
The reports on www.lebensmittelwarnung.de provide a good overview of current issues related to food. The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) publishes, among other things, alerts regarding undeclared allergens in food on this portal.
As the allergen walnut was not declared, an official recall of the product was announced.
The labeling of allergens is mandatory. If a food manufacturer uses ingredients containing allergens in production, they must always label this, even for loose goods, such as in a bakery or in the gastronomy. However, it is not mandatory to indicate allergens when the manufacturer does not purposely add the allergen but cannot rule out contamination. This is the case, for example, if the manufacturer processes ingredients containing allergens in the same facility. Many providers nevertheless print the notice “May contain traces of…” or “May contain…” to protect themselves against compensation claims.
People who suffer from a food allergy should avoid allergens in food. Even the smallest traces of allergens can lead to health complaints. Further information can be found in Annex II of the Food Information Regulation (FIR) Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct testing for allergens in food. We provide you with fast and reliable results.
