Recall: STEC/VTEC in Feta
Due to the detection of STEC/VTEC, the official recall of a feta cheese (pickled cheese) was initiated. The publication also took place via the website lebensmittelwarnung.de.
STEC/VTEC refers to potentially pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli (E. coli). The terms VTEC (Verotoxin-producing E. coli) and STEC (Shigatoxin-producing E. coli) are used synonymously. Infections with these strains can sometimes have severe, life-threatening consequences, including death. Pathogens causing these diseases are known under the term EHEC (enterohaemorrhagic E. coli). Particularly affected are both raw animal and plant-based foods.
