Safety Gate – Number of cosmetics tripled from 2023 to 2022 – problematic: BMHCA
In the EU Safety Gate Portal, products that may pose a risk to consumers are reported, such as cosmetics that do not comply with Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.
The number of reports for cosmetics tripled in 2023 compared to 2022 (cosmetic share of all reports in 2023 is approximately 30%). A main reason for this multitude of reports is mainly the detection of the banned fragrance ingredient Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA, commonly known as Lilial). This synthetic compound has been banned in cosmetic products since March 2022.
