Safety Gate Warning Notifications Cosmetics - 1st Quarter 2023 - Prohibited Fragrances and Heavy Metals
More than 100 cosmetic products were classified as unsafe in the EU rapid alert system in the 1st quarter of 2023 and recalled from the market, including due to elevated levels of mercury and non-compliance with the regulations of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009.
The recall was due to exceeding microbiological limits (ISO 17516) as well as chemical residues. Among others, the following led to the classification as unsafe:
- Prohibited fragrances Butylphenyl Methylproprional (Lilial) and Hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxylic aldehyde (Lyral)
- Methylisothiazolinone in leave-on products
- Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4)
- Formaldehyde

- Confusability with food products (cherries)
