Who doesn’t want a recently purchased shower gel or lotion to be “especially gentle”, “extra skin-friendly”, or “sensitive” to the skin? It is this particular group of cosmetics that the magazine Öko-Test has scrutinized in the current March 2019 issue.
The result: 10 out of the 12 body lotions tested scored well or very well, while for shower gels, it's 8 out of 12. The other products received satisfactory or adequate ratings.
The laboratories tested the following substances among others:
- Problematic preservatives such as formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers
- Halogenated organic compounds like Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate (IPBC)
- Allergenic fragrances such as isoeugenol, oak moss extract, cinnamal
- Mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOAH)
- PEG and PEG derivatives
For most of these parameters, there are clear legal requirements from the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. At no point during the production and use of a product may a substance be present that endangers the product's safety. Potential health risks must not occur.
Currently, there is no clear legal requirement for defining the term “sensitive”.
Have your end products tested for the above-mentioned ingredients and contaminants as well as other possible impurities. The BAV Institute and its Tentamus lab partners analyze residues and contaminants using the latest methods to meet the requirements of (EC) No 1223/2009.
