SunflowerOilRarelyAdulterated
BVL publishes results of Operation OPSON XII on food fraud.
During this year's Operation OPSON XII against food fraud, German authorities focused on the topic of “sunflower oil.” Between December 2022 and May 2023, 241 samples of sunflower oil and sunflower oil-containing products were tested for fraudulent practices in twelve federal states.
Suspicion that sunflower oil is increasingly being adulterated due to price increases and shortages was not confirmed by the results from OPSON XII. Only four oils were criticized due to misleading information. Two of these sunflower oils are suspected to have been blended with oil of a different variety. Two oils showed significant quality deficiencies due to oxidation products that indicate fat spoilage.
