TalcBanInTheEU

Talc is currently used in numerous cosmetic products, most prominently in baby powder products and powdery decorative cosmetics. It is a mineral layer silicate, specifically a magnesium silicate hydrate, with the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) designation "Talc" and, according to regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 in conjunction with Annex III, it is restricted under serial number 59.

In a report from September this year, the Committee for Risk Assessment (Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC)) of the European Chemicals Agency (European Chemicals Agency (ECHA)) classifies talc as a CMR (carcinogen, mutagen, toxic to reproduction) substance of category 1B. This classification follows the criteria of the regulation on classification, labeling, and packaging of chemical substances (CLP Regulation).

This classification leads to a ban on talc in cosmetic products in the EU, expected by 2027.
