Prohibition of Benzophenone in Cosmetics according to Regulation (EU) 2022/692
As of November 23, 2023, cosmetic products containing the carcinogenic Category 1B substance benzophenone (CAS No. 119-61-9) may no longer be marketed. As of this date, a sales and distribution ban applies, meaning no transition periods are provided and the regulation applies immediately.
The background is the classification as a carcinogenic substance, which was carried out according to the CLP Regulation 1272/2008. Thus, this substance is also prohibited in cosmetics according to the European Cosmetics Regulation VO (EG) 1223/2009.
The formation of benzophenone in cosmetics can occur from the UV filter octocrylene. This can especially occur during the storage and aging of a product.
