Consumer protection agency calls for new legal framework for contaminants (such as MOSH/POSH and MOAH, plasticizers, Bisphenol A, melamine, formaldehyde, etc.) in food packaging

Consumer protection agency calls for new legal framework for contaminants (such as MOSH/POSH and MOAH, plasticizers, Bisphenol A, melamine, formaldehyde, etc.) in food packaging

On 12 October 2021, the Federation of German Consumer Organisations (vzbv) published a report on a 2020 survey about pollutants in food packaging.

The survey found that 93% of consumers do not want harmful chemicals in food packaging and cooking and tableware. These include, for example, plasticizers in drinking bottles, bisphenols in cans, mineral oils in chocolate, or formaldehyde and melamine in coffee-to-go cups.

73% of respondents would no longer use food packaging and cooking and tableware if it could cause health damage.

The vzbz therefore calls for a new legal framework from which health-safe packaging and tableware for consumers should result.

The vzbz calls for, among other things:

- the banning of particularly harmful substances such as mutagenic, carcinogenic, or reprotoxic substances,

- the introduction of a European approval procedure for new food contact materials,

- clear labeling for food contact materials with binding rules for claims, warnings, and usage instructions, as well as for the declaration of ingredients,

- enhanced monitoring of food contact materials through food surveillance.

In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct tests for pollutants such as mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH/POSH, MOAH), plasticizers, bisphenol A, melamine, etc. in food and food contact materials. We provide fast and reliable results. Our customer advisors are very happy to assist you with any questions.
