What is hidden behind the designation INCI and what is an INCI list

What is hidden behind the designation INCI and what is an INCI list

INCI stands for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients and refers to every component contained in a cosmetic product.

According to Article 19 (1) g of the Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009, the packaging of every cosmetic product must carry a list of ingredients. This list is titled "Ingredients" and contains all components in descending order.

This list is also referred to as the INCI list, because according to Article 19 (6) of the Regulation, the INCI name (a uniform designation recognized throughout the EU) must be used for each ingredient. If no INCI name exists, designations from the IUPAC Nomenclature (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) or the Pharmacopoeia are used.

It should be noted that the mere existence of an INCI designation does not equate to the admissibility of this substance in a cosmetic product.
