Plasticizers (phthalates) in cosmetics
The entry of plasticizers (phthalates) into cosmetic products occurs repeatedly. This entry mostly happens through the migration of these substances from the packaging material into the cosmetic product. In addition, the entry via the use of plastic tubes during the production of cosmetics or the procurement of raw materials plays an important role.
Some plasticizers are classified as prohibited substances according to Annex 2 of the Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 (EU Cosmetics Regulation) due to their partially hormonal effects. They may only be contained in the final product in amounts that are safe for health and technologically unavoidable. These include, among others:
- Dibutyl phthalate
- Diethylhexyl phthalate
- Dipentyl phthalate
BAV Institute and its Tentamus laboratory partners perform the testing for plasticizers in both final products and raw materials using state-of-the-art analytical methods for you. The spectrum also includes phthalates, which are regularly monitored within the scope of eco-test investigations.
