African Swine Fever (ASF) is a viral disease that causes severe, often fatal illness in domestic and wild pigs. The first case in Germany was detected on September 10, 2020.
The virus is not transmissible to humans and therefore does not pose an immediate threat to human health. Consuming food from infected animals is also considered harmless to health.
However, an infection in the domestic pig population can lead to enormous economic damage.
