More people are suffering from inadequate iodine supply again

Through a balanced diet, the body's iodine requirement can only be met by about half in this country, which leads to the enlargement of the thyroid gland and the so-called goiter formation. The legislator reacted to the widespread iodine deficiency, which led to up to 100,000 thyroid surgeries annually. Since the late 1980s, the use of iodized table salt has been permitted in Germany.

Now studies by the Robert Koch Institute (DEGS, KIGGS) have shown that iodine intake in Germany is still below the estimated average requirement in 30 percent of adults and 44 percent of children.

Further long-term studies showed that iodine supply in children is even declining. Experts see the reasons primarily in the sharp decline in the use of iodized salt in the food industry. For example, only about 10% iodized salt is used in industrially manufactured baked goods.

The iodine content of salt is regulated by law and ranges from 15 to 25 mg/kg. In this concentration range, iodized salt poses no health risk for healthy people or those with thyroid conditions.
