As part of the food surveillance, in addition to food samples, drinking water, feed, and consumer products such as cosmetics, tattoo inks, tobacco products, and articles of daily use are also examined.

In 2023, a total of nearly 108,000 inspection visits were conducted by the surveillance authorities, and 48,000 samples were tested. Of these tested samples, around 16% were found to be non-compliant, with only 0.3% deemed harmful to health.

A total of 27 tattoo inks were also among the tested samples, of which 63% had to be deemed non-compliant. The main reason for the non-compliance was the exceedance of limit values for various substances. Due to this fact, tattoo inks remain a focus of official surveillance and are specifically sampled.

If you would like to have your tattoo inks tested microbiologically or chemically, please feel free to contact us.
