2023 Annual Report of the CVUAs Baden Württemberg published – Noroviruses in Food

Virus infections are dreaded in nursing homes and kindergartens: Noroviruses spread rapidly among young children or residents in need of care. Severe vomiting and diarrhea due to a norovirus infection are also experienced by previously healthy individuals of all ages!

Nine guests fell ill after having breakfast at the same café. Since the consumed foods were no longer available, the responsible food surveillance authority took hygiene swab samples in the kitchen and sanitary areas. The central laboratory for disease samples at CVUA Stuttgart detected the RNA of noroviruses on a kitchen worktable and in the staff toilet. The operator admitted that the café had to remain closed the day before due to illness. Thus, carriers among the kitchen or service staff, who returned to work too soon after their own illness, became the source of the infection.

In Germany, noroviruses also caused the highest number of notifiable gastrointestinal infections in 2023.

In our partner laboratories, we regularly conduct testing for noroviruses. We provide you with fast and reliable results and are happy to advise you on all matters related to product safety. If you have any questions, our customer advisors are available to assist you.
