The official food inspection in Baden-Württemberg conducted more than 100,000 control visits in 2011, during which 31% (72,000 establishments) of the approximately 232,000 registered businesses were inspected one or more times. In 28% of the controlled businesses, food inspectors identified nearly 33,000 violations in total.

1595 inspected establishments (2.2%) had to be immediately closed due to unhygienic conditions or were temporarily closed voluntarily. More than 51,000 samples – including food, cosmetics, consumer goods, and tobacco products – were taken and examined by the food inspectors. 17% of the food samples were found to be objectionable.

Violations of labeling regulations were once again the dominant reason for objections. 100 samples (0.2%) were deemed harmful to health, particularly due to pathogenic germs (such as Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella, or verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli), sharp foreign objects, or chemical contaminants.
