The Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Offices (CVUAs) in Baden-Württemberg conduct operational inspections based on a risk-oriented classification. In 2017, a total of 238,081 food businesses, from artisanal businesses to large corporations, were registered in Baden-Württemberg. In total, 111,007 inspection visits were carried out in 78,296 businesses, of which 16% showed significant deficiencies. 72% of the violations were related to hygiene deficiencies, 25% to inadequate labeling.
717 businesses had to be immediately closed due to the unhygienic conditions prevailing there, to protect consumers.
Furthermore, in 2017, the CVUAs conducted sensory, chemical, and microbiological examinations of 42,635 foods and 1,663 wines. Of all examined samples, 8,190 were objected to (18.5%).
