Antibiotic-resistant germs in poultry

Antibiotic-resistant germs in poultry

Antibiotic-resistant germs are one of the biggest global public health threats because they make infections that are actually treatable increasingly difficult to manage. The Öko-Test Magazine purchased 23 fresh chicken breast fillets of different rearing conditions in discount and (organic) supermarkets in autumn 2025, twelve of which came from organically raised animals.

The samples were microbiologically analyzed for the presence of various pathogenic as well as potentially antibiotic-resistant germs. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria were detected in 14 of the 23 chicken breast fillets examined. Among others, Staphylococcus aureus, representatives of the Enterobacteriaceae family, and Escherichia coli were identified. Although the detection of these microorganisms does not necessarily pose an acute health risk, it indicates a hygienically relevant contamination and requires particularly careful and hygienic handling of the products.

At the BAV Institute, we conduct tests on Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacteriaceae, and Escherichia coli.

We provide you with fast and reliable results and are happy to advise you on all matters related to product safety. If you have any questions, our customer advisors are at your disposal.
