Authorities investigate fraud in olive oil and vanilla

During the OPSON IX operation, coordinated by Europol and INTERPOL, eleven European countries joined forces to uncover fraud cases, including those involving olive oil and vanilla.

For olive oil, the highest quality level "extra virgin" was investigated. To maximize profit, expensive olive oil is diluted with inferior other oils and colorants are used. Irregularities were found in about a quarter of the oils tested.

The declaration of vanilla and the addition of artificial flavorings in natural vanilla were also checked by the authorities. In 17% of the cases, anomalies were discovered.
