BfR-Communication: Hydrogen Cyanide and Cadmium in Linseeds

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) published the notice "Hydrocyanic acid and cadmium in flaxseeds - Better no raw, crushed flaxseeds for infants" on 16.06.2026.

It updates the recommendations for the consumption of flaxseeds, especially crushed flaxseeds, for adults and children based on current findings. The focus is on the possible release of hydrocyanic acid during consumption. In addition, the notice evaluates the potential contamination of flaxseeds with cadmium and takes this aspect into account in the health risk assessment.

In our Tentamus laboratories, examinations for hydrocyanic acid and cadmium are regularly conducted. If you have any questions, our customer advisors are always available to assist you.
