BfR publishes FAQ on 3-MCPD, 2-MCPD and glycidyl fatty acid esters in food
The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has published "Questions and Answers on the Contamination of Food with 3-MCPD-, 2-MCPD- and Glycidyl Fatty Acid Esters".
In it, the BfR addresses the recently updated risk assessment of EFSA for 3-MCPD and its fatty acid esters and confirms the tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 2µg/kg body weight per day derived by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The BfR considers the EFSA's result as a confirmation of the TDI value internally derived in 2012. According to the BfR, the exposure in the adult population does not exceed the newly established TDI value. Only in younger groups, particularly high consumers and infants who are exclusively fed infant formula, does the intake of 3-MCPD and its fatty acid esters slightly exceed the TDI value. There is currently no evidence of health damage in children fed industrially produced infant milk.
