BfR Publishes Information Sheet on the Hygienic Operation of Freestanding Water Dispensers
Water dispensers have been critically viewed by authorities in the past due to conspicuous microbiological-hygienic findings. In many cases, however, this was also due to the fact that water from freestanding water dispensers was judged based on inappropriate criteria.
The current information sheet from the BfR correctly states that these waters are legally considered a food product. Furthermore, reference is made to the guideline of the "German Watercooler Association", which contains industry-specific hygiene requirements and microbiological criteria. The BFR has published sensible recommendations for the operation of these water dispensers in this information sheet. These include, for example, the selection of devices, the location, cleaning and disinfection, etc.
Further information on this topic can be found in the BfR information sheet and the guideline of the German Watercooler Association (www.gwca.eu).
