BfR publishes a questions and answers catalog on transmission routes of the novel coronavirus

An epidemic caused by the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) infection has occurred in various parts of Asia and especially China. Several cases of illness have also been reported in Europe and Germany over the past week.

China is the largest exporting country in the world. Numerous foodstuffs and consumer goods are exported from there, including to Germany. Many consumers are therefore concerned about whether infection is possible through contact with contaminated goods.

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) confirms the assessments of the Robert Koch Institute in its questions and answers catalog on this topic.

Due to the low environmental stability of the viruses, inactivation occurs on dry surfaces within hours. Therefore, infection via food and consumer goods is unlikely to impossible. Only when handling raw meat should the usual hygiene rules be observed.

Our customer advisors are available for any questions you may have.
