BfR: Updated Maximum Quantity Proposals for Vitamins and Minerals in Food Supplements
The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) updated its recommendations for maximum levels of vitamins and minerals in food supplements (FS) and fortified foods based on the current state of knowledge in its opinion No. 009/2021 dated 15.03.2021. The upper intake levels for the respective nutrients derived by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) were taken into account.
With the maximum level proposals, the BfR aims to ensure that the nutrient amounts in FS and fortified foods are limited to allow for additional nutrient intake without leading to an oversupply of the respective nutrients in the population. Furthermore, the recommendations should serve as a basis for setting uniform maximum levels for FS and fortified foods at the EU level.
The new maximum levels for a variety of vitamins and minerals have been updated based on current findings.
For example, mentioned are:
- Magnesium, Calcium
- B-vitamins, Vitamin C
