BLL: Uniform Nutritional Labeling Model on the Front-of-Pack
According to the requirements of the Food Information Regulation (FIR), certain details of the mandatory nutritional labeling may be repeated in the main view field of the package (usually the front of the package).
Here, there is the option to indicate only the calorific value or the calorific value and the amounts of fat, saturated fatty acids, sugar, and salt (with nutritional reference). Since there are over 150 labeling models worldwide, 80 of which are with nutritional reference, the BLL (German Federation for Food Law and Food Science) has agreed to a uniform, illustrative, and easily understandable labeling model with nutritional reference on the display side of packaged and processed foods with the majority of the German food industry. Important criteria included that the model reflects a simplified representation of the mandatory nutritional declaration, that it is presented in a neutral manner without evaluation, and that the requirements of the FIR are met. The reference size of the model should generally be 100 g or 100 ml, analogous to the mandatory nutritional declaration, and a portion reference for single-serving portion packs with a filling quantity of less than 100g/ml should also be possible.
