BodyJewelryWithRisks:Tattoos
Carcinogenic substances, allergies, infections – all of these are currently being discussed and researched in connection with tattoo inks in the scientific world. The magazine BfR2GO of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) reports in its current issue on the possible health consequences that tattooing may entail.
Tattoo inks, unlike cosmetic products, are applied not on the skin but under the top layers of the skin. Therefore, manufacturers of tattoo inks are not required, as with cosmetics, to have toxicological safety reports prepared. There are regulatory standards for substances, but they are currently insufficient for comprehensive health safety.
An infection with bacteria, viruses, or fungi during tattooing (due to poor hygiene) cannot be ruled out. In addition, certain ingredients may trigger undesirable reactions, such as allergies. A possible carcinogenic effect of certain substances is also being discussed.
Conclusion: Although the proportion of people with tattoos continues to rise, not all health risks are yet clarified, and potential long-term effects remain unknown.
