Burkholderia cepacia in mouthwash

In 2018, the RKI in Berlin (Robert Koch Institute) reported an increased infection of hospital patients with the germ Burkholderia cepacia. A potential source of the germ is a mouthwash that was used in all cases. The germ is typically found in groundwater and soil and can survive in a moist environment for an extended period. In water-rich cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, the germ can multiply significantly and thus pose a threat to human health.

As part of the microbiological quality control of cosmetic products according to DIN EN ISO 17516, the germ Burkholderia cepacia is also detected. In case of bacterial growth, we are happy to carry out germ identification for specific detection of Burkholderia cepacia at the customer's request.

Ensure the quality of your products and check the microbiological safety according to regulation VO (EC) 1223/2009.
