BVL and BfArM publish guide on the classification of Ayurvedic products
Ayurveda has developed into a trend in recent decades. Particularly in online sales, it can be difficult to assess which regulations they fall under. A joint expert commission from the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) and the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) has now published an opinion to provide the responsible authorities with a guideline for classifying these products.
Mainly, it concerns the classification between food or medicinal products. A mere reference to Ayurveda is not sufficient as a presentation medicinal product. Due to the unsatisfactory data situation on the pharmacological effects of the products, the distinction remains a case-by-case examination.
