Campylobacter on poultry products - In BAV Newsletter 01/2015

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment reports a hygiene problem in the poultry industry. According to the report, around a quarter of poultry meat is contaminated with Campylobacter pathogens. The pathogen sometimes causes severe diarrheal diseases, which can also be fatal. In Germany, approximately 70,000 people fall ill from these bacteria each year. Only a few germs are necessary for an infection. The source cited is hygiene in barn and slaughterhouses. The pathogens usually reach the skin and meat of the animal via the poultry intestine. Lack of kitchen hygiene is often the cause of transmission to humans. According to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Agriculture, in addition to official controls, businesses face increased self-monitoring since the EU is lowering the standards for meat inspection. (Source: www.weser-kurier.de)
