Carcinogenic mycotoxins (aflatoxins) detected in spices – results of monitoring in 2021

In 2021, as part of food monitoring at CVUA Sigmaringen, 29 spice samples (dill, rosemary, and oregano) were tested for mycotoxins. It was found that approximately 25% of the samples were contaminated with mycotoxins.

The kidney-toxic and genotoxic Ochratoxin A was not detected in any sample, the eight positive samples contained small amounts of the carcinogenic aflatoxins. The findings were each below the maximum levels according to Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 on contaminants in foodstuffs.
