Cavity protection in toothpaste under the scrutiny of Stiftung Warentest
In the October 2020 issue of Stiftung Warentest, 21 toothpaste products, including 10 natural cosmetic products, were tested with regard to their fluoride caries prevention, stain removal, packaging, as well as their declaration and advertising claims. Among the types of toothpaste were universal and whitening pastes.
The basis for evaluating caries protection was the fluoride content of the pastes. Ideally, the fluoride content is around 1500 ppm for adults. While manufacturers use plant-based raw materials for caries protection, for which there is insufficient evidence of efficacy, numerous studies can demonstrate a caries-inhibiting effect for fluoride.
The test results are as follows:
- 17 toothpastes received a very good rating, 5 pastes a good rating. The reason for the deduction in scores is the satisfactory removal of tooth discoloration caused by the consumption of food and beverages.
- 8 tooth creams, including 7 certified natural cosmetic products, received a poor rating because they either contain too little (<50 - 480 ppm) or no fluoride at all.
More detailed information about the test series can be found in the Stiftung Warentest issue No. 10/2020.
