Amendment of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008: Ban on titanium dioxide E 171 as a food additive

The European Commission has revoked the authorization of titanium dioxide as a food additive. The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) could not exclude concerns regarding the genotoxicity of titanium dioxide. Genotoxicity refers to the damage to genetic material (DNA) caused by chemical substances or physical influences.

The changes come into effect on 07.02.2022. The regulation (EU) No 2022/63 of January 14, 2022, amending Annexes II and III of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives provides for a transition period of 6 months, i.e., until 07.08.2022, for the ban on titanium dioxide (E 171) as a food additive. Food products already produced may remain on the market until the end of their shelf life.

Titanium dioxide remains temporarily approved for use as a coloring agent in medicinal products. The approval for the medicinal field remains in place for at least three years and will be reviewed again thereafter.
