Cheese: No more nutritional labeling?

Cheese: No more nutritional labeling?

The ALTS addressed the question of whether nutritional labeling for cheese is truly mandatory during its 81st work meeting.

According to Article 16 (3) of Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 (Food Information Regulation-FIC), foods that have only undergone a maturing process and consist of only one ingredient/class are exempt from mandatory nutritional labeling.

The ALTS believes that this exemption does not apply to cheese. Cheese does not only consist of milk but also other ingredients like microorganisms, enzymes, or salt. Furthermore, cheese undergoes more processing steps than just maturation.

There will be no new developments from the Commission for the time being.

Our customer advisors are well-versed in the labeling regulations and are happy to assist you. Please call us if you have any questions.
