Climate change poses new risks to food safety
The European Food Safety Authority EFSA, as part of the project "Climate Change as a Cause of Emerging Risks for Food and Feed Safety, Plant and Animal Health, and Nutrient Quality" - known as CLEFSA, has developed methods to assess the impact of climate change on food. This makes it possible to identify risks early in the long term and to deal with them as best as possible.
Impacts of climate change that are already being felt include:
Food safety can be directly affected by the increased growth of toxin producers. Seafood such as mussels can, for example, be increasingly contaminated by algal toxins.
Indirectly, food safety can also suffer from climate change. Increased temperatures can lead to the emergence of new pests that affect animal and plant health.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct tests for cadmium, nickel, and pesticides. We provide fast and reliable results.
