Cold Brew Teas - Quick Refreshment in Summer

Cold brew tea is a popular refreshing drink in the summer that is easy to prepare: you pour cold water over tea bags or tea blends and let them steep. However, not every tea is suitable for this method. Herbal and fruit teas should generally be prepared with boiling water to kill germs like bacteria or mold, as they are only dried after harvesting. For special black teas made for cold brew, the risk is lower as they are treated with a hot steam process to reduce germs. Nevertheless, it is recommended not to use cold brew tea for infants and children, as it may contain caffeine.

When purchasing, one should carefully check the ingredient list: Many cold brew teas contain flavorings, fruit pieces, or sweeteners that influence the taste. There are also pure teas without additives, consisting solely of black tea.

The European Tea & Herbal Infusions Europe (THIE), representing the interests of manufacturers and traders of tea (Camellia sinensis), herbal and fruit teas, and their extracts in Europe, has also set microbiological guidelines for cold brew teas.

At our BAV Institute, we regularly conduct microbiological tests according to THIE's requirements. We provide you with fast and reliable results and are happy to advise you on all matters concerning product safety. If you have any questions, our customer advisors are ready to assist you.
