Color-coded nutrition labeling is being introduced in France
Alongside the United Kingdom, France is introducing a color-coded nutritional labeling system as the second country in Europe. The "5-Colour Nutrition Label (5-CNL)" or "Nutri-Score" aligns with the requirements of the WHO European Food and Nutrition Action Plan 2015 - 2020.
The plan calls for implementing an easily understandable food labeling system. This is intended to provide consumers with more information than just nutritional values. The aim is to achieve better and simpler information for citizens to promote healthier eating and simultaneously motivate food manufacturers to offer health-promoting products.
The color-coded Nutri-Score labeling is based on the model of the UK Food Standards Agency. Foods and beverages are categorized into five graded categories (A-E). This allows consumers to quickly and easily understand to what extent the product has a "health-promoting" effect or, if consumed regularly, may have a negative impact on health.
