Commission Recommendation (EU) 2019/1888 on monitoring of acrylamide published
In November of this year, the Commission's Recommendation (EU) 2019/1888 "on monitoring the levels of acrylamide in certain foods" was published. EU member states and food business operators are called upon to investigate the acrylamide content in the following foods:
-
Potato products such as croquettes, rösti, duchess potatoes, potato skillets, potato-meat and potato-cheese dishes
- Baked goods such as rolls (hamburger rolls, milk rolls, etc.), pita bread, tortillas, croissants, donuts, bread specialties like pumpernickel, ciabatta with olives, etc.), pancakes, churros
-
Cereal products such as rice and corn crackers, cereal snacks, honey roasted muesli
-
Others: such as vegetable chips, roasted nuts and oilseeds, dried fruits, olives in brine, butter toffee, caramel, nougat, etc.
So far, there is little data on the content of these foods, and there are no guidelines for them. The benchmark levels in the annex of Regulation (EU) No. 2017/2158 "establishing mitigation measures and benchmark levels for the reduction of the presence of acrylamide in food" cannot be applied to these foods.
For example, the benchmark level for ready-to-eat French fries of 500 µg/kg is also applicable to other frozen and oven-baked products made from fresh potatoes, but NOT to, for example, rösti or croquettes.
By collecting the investigative data as part of the monitoring, specific benchmark levels for the acrylamide content can be determined over time for the listed food groups.
