In 2016, the official food inspection in Germany controlled more than 519,000 businesses. Violations were found in 23.0% of cases. This is roughly at the same level as in previous years.
The rate of complaints was highest for butcheries, bakeries, ice cream parlors, as well as gastronomy and other community catering establishments, each with over 26%.
The vast majority of all complaints concerned general hygiene in operation, accounting for 49.1%, followed by food labeling and presentation (24.5%) and deficiencies in hygiene management (21.5%).
