Consumer Center: Maximum Levels for Vitamins and Minerals in Dietary Supplements?

In May 2024, the consumer center published the article "Finally Maximum Levels for Vitamins and Minerals?" .

More than 20 years ago, the EU decided to establish legally uniform maximum levels for vitamins and minerals in dietary supplements. Unfortunately, these do not yet exist either in Germany or in the EU.

The regulations in the EU are currently very inconsistent. Many member states have issued their own recommendations or legal requirements, which differ significantly from each other. For Germany, there have been only non-binding recommendations from the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) since 2018, which apparently only a few manufacturers follow.

Since 2020, there has been a working group at the EU Commission again, which is supposed to develop uniform maximum level regulations for the EU and also uses the BfR recommendations as a scientific basis. Initial proposals have since been published.

In addition to maximum levels for vitamins and minerals, further regulations are necessary for numerous substances in dietary supplements, particularly plant-based ingredients. According to the consumer center, there must be a positive list for these so-called "other substances." Substances not included in the positive list should no longer be used.
