A sample from the Consumer Center revealed that out of 112 food samples, vitamin D was added to 68 samples, although this is prohibited in Germany without authorization. The addition of vitamin D is generally allowed in Germany only for margarines and spreads. All other food groups require approval. Foods such as milk, baker's yeast, or mushrooms can be enriched with vitamin D through UV radiation. They were approved as novel foods under the so-called Novel Food Regulation and must comply with its requirements.

In addition, the investigation found that these maximum levels were exceeded in 13 products. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has proposed maximum levels, including for dairy products, bread, and spreads. Excessive intake of vitamin D can lead to health problems, such as kidney damage or heart rhythm disturbances.

In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly determine vitamin D content in foods. We provide you with quick and reliable results.
