Contaminations with lead in cosmetic products

 

Lead is prohibited according to the annex on prohibited substances in the EU Cosmetics Regulation VO (EC) 655/2013 in cosmetic products. Possible traces may only be present in technically unavoidable and harmless quantities.

Entry sources are usually raw materials of mineral origin (e.g., talc, kaolin, etc.) as well as other raw materials that are subject to contamination during manufacturing and processing.

In addition to lead, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, and mercury are especially important. Values for technical avoidability have been published for these five heavy metals, which must not be exceeded.

Ensure the quality of your raw materials and end products and have them regularly tested for lead content and other heavy metals. The BAV Institute within the international Tentamus Laboratory Group will gladly advise you on the selection of products and related testing parameters.
