CVUA on smoothie powder: unauthorized irradiation and inadequate nutritional and health claims
After the Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Office (CVUA) Karlsruhe already examined ready-to-drink smoothies from online retailers in 2020, the focus in autumn 2021 was on their powdered counterparts. Ten smoothie powders were tested for heavy metals, contaminants, and irradiation. The advertising and labeling were also reviewed.
The following balance could be drawn:
· Fortunately, only inconspicuous contents of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (lead, cadmium) were found.
· An inadmissible treatment with ionizing radiation (“irradiation”) was proven for one of the organic smoothie powders examined.
· In 70% of the samples, the online presentation did not comply with the Health Claims Regulation (Regulation (EC) 1924/2006), as non-compliant nutritional and health claims were made.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly carry out the listed analyses:
· Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
· Heavy metals
· Detection of food irradiation
· Labeling review
We deliver quick and reliable results.
